Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, renowned globally for his extraordinary talent and contributions to Indian classical music, breathed his last at the age of 73 due to heart-related complications. On Sunday, December 15, Hussain was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in San Francisco after experiencing severe heart-related issues. His close friend and collaborator, flautist Rakesh Chaurasia, confirmed the news , expressing shock and sorrow at the loss of one of India’s most cherished musical icons.
In a statement, Hussain’s manager, Nirmala Bachani, revealed that the maestro had been battling blood pressure-related complications in addition to his heart condition. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, his health deteriorated rapidly, leading to his untimely demise.
Known for his innovative approach to tabla playing and his ability to blend Indian classical rhythms with global music genres, Zakir Hussain earned a legendary status over the course of his illustrious career.
